Delay not justified

Many a time people do not realise that when they are not on time it is not merely reflecting their lackadaisical attitude but DISRUPTING SCHEDULE OF OTHERS. Can we classify them as morons?

Thinking Out of the Box

When I gave assignments, students would normally copy & paste from the net or committed plagiarism in other forms. I don't quite mind as long as they know what they are copying and pasting and plagiarising. It is a learning process. Plagiarising in itself is a technique. Sometimes it can be so glaring it amounts to humiliation. I try not to get offended. So, once in a while, when a student submit something so original, your heart just swell with pride. Such a case was with Shaabana. She chose a topic on effectiveness of industrial training. To gather information, she prepared her own questionnaire and got the participation from her seniors. As Tracy Chapman croons, "give me another reason to stay...", I know I at least have one!:)

To Cherish and to Perish

Almost immediately after tying the knot, Julie Lai gave me this piece of advice: "If he wants to help you with the dishes, let him do it. Don't stop him. Once he is used to not helping with the dishes, he will never do it". I took her advice.

There were moments that I cherish and moments when something perished....

Fw: CAR JACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)

Just last weekend on Friday night someone parked in a public parking
area. As he drove away he noticed a sticker on the rear window of
his car. When he took it off after he got home, it was a receipt for
gas. Luckily his friend told him not to stop as it could be someone
waiting for him to get out of the car. Then he received this email
yesterday:

'WARNING FROM POLICE - BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR
VEHICLE

NEW WAY TO DO CAR JACKINGS (NOT A JOKE)'

This is how it happens.

You walk across the parking lot, unlock your car and get inside. You
start the engine and shift into Reverse.

1. When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your
parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the
rear window. So, you shift into Park, unlock your doors, and jump out
of your car to remove that paper (or whatever it is) that is
obstructing your view.

2. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the
carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off.

3. They practically mow you down as they speed off in your car.
And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now
the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your
keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

4. BEWARE OF THIS NEW SCHEME THAT IS NOW BEING USED.

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive
away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you received and
read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and family,
especially to women.

5. A purse or briefcase contains all kinds of personal information
and identification documents, and you certainly do NOT want this to
fall into the wrong hands.

In the Pursuit of Excellence

Congratulations to Amirah Hajirah for being accepted by the University of Oxford to pursue her postgraduate studies. May her achievements inspire everybody. Learning is in itself interesting. It will be even more exhilarating when the process involves an environment that encourages excellence, exchanging and sharing of ideas, while at the same time provide an opportunity to understand people from different cultures.

Getting a degree is one thing. Getting an education is another. Obtaining wisdom is another matter altogether. And what is the purpose of going to university if all that we get at the end of the day is just a piece of paper. I was informed by a tourist guide in Hanoi that the primary objective of the university over there in the old days (now known as Literary Museum) was to instill morality. I was so overwhelmed by the wisdom of their people.

Documentary on Lab Experiments

I have been mulling over this for years. In order to make teaching and learning interesting, I have been thinking and thinking of taking videos of students at their best - doing experiments. But when the time comes, i forgot about it entirely and start thinking about it again when the students are on vacation. There are a few reasons as to why I want to do it. 1) Future students can view the environment of the lab experiment before they conduct it themselves. This is supposed (at least what I think) to give motivation and increase enthusiasm. Further, the students themselves may be able to pinpoint weaknesses in the set-up 2) I can capture good techniques versus bad techniques 3) Students during the shooting, will feel that their role is very important and they are indeed in this case, role models! They will strive to do their best 4)It serves as a record - this experiment may be obsolete in five years' time due to new technology.

The problem is I simply cannot remember to do this. Perhaps someone will remind me. And someone can volunteer to be the cameraman.

Documents and their properties

Whenever I receive a document, i would also look for the date (among other things). I strongly believe that it is so much easier for everybody to get the date straight away rather than getting someone to conduct a carbon dating procedure. Everything goes by dates anyway. Your date of birth, marriage, death, exam, your first date, the creation of this world. Something amiss?

The Demise of Reliability

In addition to the failure to connect to ibnukhaldun to upload my edited pages [1], the kulliyyah portal which is currently being served by an outdated and very old unit is encountering similar problems since launching i.e. consistent, regular, expected breakdown [2]. The consistency, regularity and meeting expectations are indeed elements of quality. Let's see if any of the quality guru can endorse this.

Note:
[1] The staff website is at a miserable MB (too embarrass to state it here).
[2]If the university is aiming for higher ranking, then systematic actions must be taken to improve the IT infrastructure and management.
[3]I was asked to use elearn. I did that in 2003. The time spent to upload was nerve-wrecking. To make it worse they blocked all email accounts in 2006 without informing users. They revamped - Once beaten, twice shy.
[4] I was asked to use the university's blog. Up to 30MB? Why should I? I created an account but I shall stick to this. I can go mobile here:)

Another failure

My official webpage cannot be updated due to failure to connect to ibnukhaldun.iiu.edu.my. I reported the problem last week. Kudos to the blogspot team for efficient operation! Thank you.

Professor RH Ottewill

Professor RH Ottewill passed away on the 4th of June 2008. This news was conveyed to me yesterday by Professor CC Ho. Professor Ottewill was instrumental in the development of colloid science and was a great teacher to many. Although I have not met him personally, he was my examiner. It is only when a person has left us that we feel like we should have made at least an attempt to say 'Hi, how are you? Thank you for your support' etc. It is only natural to be courteous to someone who has great knowledge and for many other reasons. In this aspect (and in many others), I have failed. May Allah bless him and his family.

Kevin Rudd and Israel

Upon reading the news on the motion by Rudd to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Israel and the strong support from the opposition leader, my plan to visit Australia crashed. Completely. Australia can wait. Rudd may go. May be soon. Bob Hawke with his more severe appearance was indeed more rational that the mellow-looking but heartless Rudd. This time my intuition went astray. Need special glasses.

McCain and Iraq

If McCain truly believe that the war in Iraq can be won by 2013 and if he were to be elected this November......
1. the democracy practised is questionable - let's not question their compassion
2. tell me who is the biggest contributor to environmental destruction
3. ....and murder

But the fact that he is still receiving strong support despite condoning heartless interrogation procedure for instance, and the fact that his party kind of backed by the the middle class, we can just scrap off the first deduction.

Should we still send our people to further their studies in that country?
Should we have so much of their TV programmes aired?
Can't they have someone else? Are others even worse?
